You might think that this is some sort of fantasy creature from Dungeons & Dragons–but it’s not! It’s a drawing of a giant lemur, an animal native to Madagascar that became extinct around 1000 years ago.
I found this in an a book called The Beasts That Hide from Man by Karl P. N. Shuker:
“…the tokandia, which is said to be a huge quadrupedal jumping beast that climbs up into trees and cries like a man, but does not have a man-like face. French cyptozoologist Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans has likened this remarkable mystery beast to a real-life Madagascan monster of sorts, Megaladapis, the largest lemur of all time.”
There’s another bizarre creature called the tretretretre (what an amazing name) also an extinct native to Madagascar and described by a French explorer in 1661:
“The tretretretre is a large animal, like a calf of two years, with a round head and the face of a man. The forefeet are like those of an ape, as are the hindfeet. It has curly hair, a short tail, and ears like a man’s…It is a very solitary animal; the people of the country hold it in great fear and flee from it, as it does from them.”
These both remind me of sasquatch. Speaking of which, who needs fossil evidence when you’ve got quality video footage?
